Shopify SEO Is Its Own Discipline
Generic SEO advice fails on Shopify because Shopify is not a generic CMS. The platform makes specific decisions for you. Working inside it takes specific knowledge of where the constraints live and which constraints are worth fighting.
Forced URL paths (/products/, /collections/, /blogs/, /pages/) cannot be removed without a reverse proxy or headless build. The sitemap is auto-generated and not directly editable. robots.txt.liquid allows custom rules but breaks with theme updates if not maintained. Variants share canonicals with parent products, and what gets served to crawlers can drift from what users see.
Theme and app performance compound: most themes ship with code for features the store does not use, and apps inject scripts that compound over the first 12 months of a store's life. Outside Shopify Plus, checkout and account pages are not heavily editable. Every fix has to fit inside Liquid, theme code, app behavior, or Shopify's documented settings.
