Generic SEO advice fails on BigCommerce because the platform is more opinionated than it appears at first glance. URL structure, canonical handling, blog placement, brand page admin, and faceted navigation all have BigCommerce-specific behavior that does not map cleanly to other platforms.
URL structure has five options with real trade-offs. BigCommerce offers SEO Optimized, Short, Long, Custom, and SEO Optimized Category options across product, category, and web page types. The decision is irreversible without redirects. Multi-category products follow a first-category canonical rule where BigCommerce automatically selects the first category a product is placed in helpful for avoiding duplicates, but a constraint when the auto-selected category is not the commercially relevant one.
Faceted navigation is the most cited BigCommerce SEO issue across published research. Sorting, filtering, and pagination generate thousands of URL combinations on category pages without canonical strategy, robots rules, and theme-level controls. Custom canonical URLs on categories and brands require Stencil theme file editing the platform does not expose a per-page canonical override in the standard admin.

Where BigCommerce Stores Quietly Lose Rankings
The issues we find on almost every store we audit. None are fatal. All cost traffic.
Faceted navigation URLs in the index
The single largest source of crawl budget waste on BigCommerce stores. Per published research from SeoProfy, AVADA, and OuterBox, BigCommerce's filter and sort URLs are crawlable by default. Stores with hundreds of products and a dozen filters end up with tens of thousands of indexable thin URLs competing with category and product pages.
Brand pages with default empty content
Brand pages reachable from the navigation but never edited because the admin lives in the Banners section rather than traditional page admin. Empty pages indexed and competing with branded queries. Once you know the convention it is fine until then, brand pages tend to be neglected.
Blog subdomain splitting authority
BigCommerce installs the blog on a subdomain (blog.yourdomain.com) by default. Stores that never moved the blog to a subdirectory accumulate years of blog authority that does not benefit the commercial pages on the main domain. The fix involves moving the blog to a subdirectory with redirect strategy.
Duplicate content from blog listing pages
The default BigCommerce blog listing displays full posts, creating duplicate content between listing and post URLs. The fix involves theme customization to show excerpts only. Per OuterBox's and AVADA's published research, this is a consistent default behavior issue.
Multi-category products with confusing canonical signals
Products placed in multiple categories with SEO Optimized Category enabled, where the auto-selected first category is not the commercially relevant one. Per Orbit Media's published BigCommerce research, this creates URLs that imply a taxonomy structure their products do not follow.
Custom canonicals assumed to be a checkbox
Per AVADA's and OuterBox's published research, setting custom canonical URLs on categories and brands requires Stencil theme file editing on BigCommerce. Editors expecting a per-page canonical field in the page editor find it does not exist. Workarounds through theme files work but require developer time.
